Dado sets either come with metal or plastic shims. These tend to drop down between the threads on the table saws arbor, and when you tighten the nut, it deforms the hole at the center of the shim. This ruins the shim's precise thickness. Magnetic shims will not drop down into the threads and will not deform when tightened. They are also easy to install because they stick to the outer blade. We make our shims bore at 1-1/4" to fit all arbors 5/8" - 1-1/4". The larger size on a smaller arbor does not affect the setup because they are used for thickness and magnetically stick to the side of the blade.
